Blues Traveler 4th of July, v3.0 - 7/4/14 - WOW!!! This was my third cake for the guys in Blues Traveler! Every 4th of July they descend on us here in Colorado, for an amazing Independence Day performance at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater Rocks, since 1994. Every year I get to take them a cake is extra special, at least to me! Be sure to check out my first two Blues Traveler cakes, although this one is my favorite
This year Uncle Sam Black Cat Jam is joined by Lady Liberty, with rainbow tie-dye showing thru her pale green skirts, off on a wild ride on a Giant Firework into the starry night, on their way to honor the newest album "Blow Up the Moon"!
The figures are sculpted from hardened gumpaste, and the firework is filled with Vanilla Chocolate Chip cake and Chocolate Swiss Buttercream. The band absolutely loved it! I was informed later that Lady Liberty ended up on the dashboard of the Band Bus!!!!! Ooooooo......
THANK YOU Blues Traveler ! Let's both keep Making Art

WORK IN PROGRESS
Not too many photos here, I was sweating over this one!! The interesting part is the base for the whole thing. I used a piece of food-safe white PVC pipe that I cut in half lengthwise with my jigsaw. I then cut two circles from 1/2'' plywood, and screwed them in around the edges of the PVC. I then drilled a 1'' hole from one of the circles and glued a 8'' piece of dowel into the hole. One long screw secured it, reinforcing the glue. The hardest part of this structure was then drilling the hole into the base board. You can see where I used a 45 degree triangle and a 1'' paddle bit to drill, at an angle, thru the base. Tricky!!! This structure was then wrapped with my signature plastic-wrap food safing, filled with cake.
The figures actually took most of my attention on this cake one of the first things I did was make a dummy base. More of the same white PVC (never use black PVC), covered, with a hole drilled down into it for each figure. Both Lady Liberty and Black Cat Jam started life as a chopstick, going down into the hole, and built in layers of hardened sugarpaste. About halfway thru Lady Liberty's skirts, I ripped them off and added the Rainbow tie-dye pleats that peek thru her grey-green skirts. You KNOW she has to have rainbows under there!!!
The tube was filled with circles of choclate chip cake, covered in chocolate buttercream. One of my personal favorite combinations!! The whole Firework was covered in rainbow swirl fondant, and the handpainted white on black Black Cat logo was added. Last but not least, Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam Black Cat Jam took to the saddle, and we all drove south to Red Rocks Amphitheater. When we arrived we were able to get a climb van ride to the back door backstage entry, where the security guys have gotten to know me and my cakes. I dont forget anybody, and usually bring these guys cake scraps in to-go containers, made just for them <3.
After the show we cut into the Cake, and served it around. Nothing like SUGAR after a long night of dancing!! If you have the chance I highly recommend attending the 4th of July celebration at Red Rocks. It is one of those incredible experiences that never leaves you! I would also recommend the Blues Traveler album that inspired this design, "Blow Up the Moon"
