50STLV, Star Trek 50th Anniversary Convention 8/4/17 - Cake, the Final Frontier. These are the Voyages of worldwide Sugar Artists, their continuing mission to seek out new methods and techniques of Cake Preparation, to Boldly Go Where No Cake Has Gone Before!!!!! We are here in Las Vegas celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, produced by Roddenberry. While working on this project I realized how much the early Enterprise (TOS) influenced my personality, continuing through today with the incredible social works by heroes George Takei and Nichelle Nichols.
I've always been obsessed with Star Trek, since I was a little kid. It was so daring for the day, with roles filled by people one did not see on TV back then (not white). They grasped thorny controversial issues and disguised them in sci-fi fantasy. My favorite kind!! In particular I loved the opening.... Space, the Final Frontier. These are the Voyages of the Star Ship Enterprise...
So naturally I HAD to make the Enterprise NC-1701, TOS (The Original Series). I used to get SO EXCITED when the theramin music started, and the Enterprise swooped over the bright orange and yellow planet below. This was the imagery I wanted to Show. Scroll down for a discussion on the nuts and bolts of this sculpture
This piece of tribute art came through the luggage check in a custom built crate unscathed...pics later. Made with the astronomical assistance of Magic Colours and Satin Ice fondant <3 Live Long and Prosper <3 xxoo Heather at Art2Eat Cakes

THE CONVENTION
This was a great experience from top to bottom. Star Trek Fans are the best. The show started with an amazing sugar lineup. Mitchie Curran hosted a Make Your Own Cookie Art competition every day, and I struck out into the Con to find the most incredibly cosplayed Judges I could find. I made friends with Forengi, Vulcans, and even a huge Klingon. I said to him, "I need your help!". He replied "Of course you do. You are Hoo-man". I met John Delancie (Quark) and got to show him a photo of the amazing chocolate sculpture Jeanne Winslow had created of him (he was impressed). The Tribbles I bought for my kids wouldn't stop squeaking during the podcast, and I took a zillion photos. Last we served a massive 50th Anniversary Cake made by Annie Cave along with champagne and a toast from Rod Roddenberry himself. After that, I was allowed to sit, ever so briefly, on the ORIGINAL Enterprise bridge set!!!! This was truly amazing. It smelled like really old wood, dusty tempera paint, and ancient vinyl. I was so incredibly tempted to push one of those glowing buttons I could taste it, even though I knew it would just push through the thin painted wood and destroy an antique. I barely dared breathe as I was directed to gently sit in the vinyl Captain's Chair, just long enough to get the photo you see. WOW. Thanks so much. I will NEVER forget that <3

WORK IN PROGRESS
As already stated, this was an absolute labor of love. I used every scrap of knowledge and skill to get this sugar sculpture to the Convention intact. It all started with a to-scale layout, like all of my sculptures. Fortunately, there is a TON of reference available, even down to actual blueprints complete with front, side and top views!!! This sculpture was a dummy cake, but everything was done the same as if the Planet were made from cake instead of durable tinfoil. All of the structures were food safed, and all sculpting is sugar gumpaste. I was really proud of the Phaser Beam and exploding asteroid, which is made from tinted rice paper crumpled and soaked with corn syrup. Cool huh??? After this piece was done, I built a custom crate around it. I then put it into the luggage system, and watched it thunk down the luggage carousel in Vegas. No problems. Some of the other pieces in the display were not so lucky. We fixed them right up, and the Show continued.
