Rainbow Pegacorn Mama and Baby - 7/18/11-
This is undoubtedly one of my most popular cakes, and one of the craziest stories you will find on this page.
My middle daughter has always been very specific in her Birthday requests, and this one was no different. When she requested this one, I was not too surprised. She wanted "a Rainbow Pegasus Unicorn with a Rainbow Horn and Rainbow wings and a tiny baby unicorn too". The things we do for our kids, right?? Anything for you my little Baby Rainbow Pegacorn! I will admit to you this cake took WAY too long, but it was a labor of sheerest love. So much of what I had learned in other art media came out to play in the invention of this design, illustration, graphic design, wire sculpture, and more.
This creation was filled with Golden Almond Pound Cake with pineapple-mango filling and Vanilla Buttercream. The feathers and mane are made of individually hand-shaped hardened gumpaste. The wings and head have a food-safe internal support skeleton and are composed of rice-krispy-treat.

It was a HUGE hit at the party, and my 7-yr-old was very brave when it came time to cut into it. No one cried, I promise, and once they discovered how delicious the inside was, it was all forgotten and forgiven! It was quite the event, in the neighborhood bouncy castle playground, on a plastic tablecloth. We cut it up, and ate it, minus the head which went home with us.
The Joy in that little dingy room was indescribable, vibrant, rainbow excitement, palpable with its own flavor, above and beyond the taste of the cake. It was electric. That was one of the first times I tasted what I call "Cake Zaps", where everyone present is so fully in the moment, thrilled, turned on, and in tune that it becomes an indelible memory, forever frozen in the
moment of sheer childlike wonder.

A few weeks later I posted the picture to Flickr, with NO WATERMARK 😨😨😨
And just like that she galloped into the next phase of learning about the Cake World!!! Within a few weeks she had been viewed over 10k times, shared over 3k. At first I was thrilled! But then she started surfacing in cheesy blogs, and worse,other artists started claiming it as their work! It used to stress me out, and I spent considerable effort chasing geese, until I realized I disliked spending my time that way. I still see her, galloping on the blogs, shared in group posts, showing up in click-baits, running free without her watermark!!
I've lost count of the number of blogs and re-postings this has been through, but a short list follows below. She is an excellent example of why you always always watermark your cake photos, if nothing else than to lead people back to you and your site! Today's app market has several good watermark/photo editing programs, available right on your phone

Warning: I was still a mom making mom-cakes serving mom-style with NO GLOVES at this point in my Cake Game. Now I gasp in horror at the thought. But it is such a fun vid to watch, albeit poor quality from a 2011 'smartphone'. Yes, the kids of all ages always crowd close to that sharp knife....
I can't help but share for you dedicated souls who have ventured this far into my personal website world. You deserve it:

Since then, I've received hundreds of emails, asking for this cake! Clients have asked me to ship this cake to them, overnight, on other continents, for birthdays, for anniversaries, for graduations, you name it.
I've also gotten dozens of emails asking how to make this cake, or if there was a tutorial available for this cake.
So I decided to film one, on my own.Yikes. I wrote the class, made the step-outs, filmed, edited, and uploaded it here. So much learning, led by this cake design! Since then, I've been the sweet inspirations for SO many sweet successes!!!
