Elf Safety Collaboration 11-18-2020 -
It can be hard at the North Pole sometimes. Santa says every year "NOW ALFIE, DON'T BE ON ELFSTAGRAM WHEN YOU'RE AROUND THE REINDEER". Well, this year, Santa's Worst Fear has come true, and Alfie is now face down in a Reindeer Pie, his treasured widget dropped and cracked onto the trampled snow. Later he will realize how fortunate he was to have a turd cushion his fall and squish, otherwise he might have been mint-flavored Elf Jelly on the bottom of Vixen's hoof. As it is, Santa held his nose and gave Alfie the Night Off.
Moral of the Story?
Reindeer Poop isn't all Glitter and Dragees, the way it looks on Elfstagram
Or
Dang it Stinks but Your'e Glad to Have It
Made from Satin Ice Fondant and Chocopan Gumpaste, with Chef Rubber Dragees. Hoof is sculpted from Magic Chocolate modeling chocolate
Made as part of a Collective Effort to Watch out for Elf Safety (and yours) this Holiday 2020 Season. BE SURE to check out the ENTIRE Elf & Safety Cake Collective Collaboration for some top-notch LOLS!! Naughty, Nasty, HILARIOUS....

Alfie here was a Dummy. Seriously. But he was also a Cake Dummy, in that there is no Cake. I would always prefer there be cake, but, people are constantly watching their waistlines. What is a Cake Artist to do?? Alfie is sculpted, a head and four unrelated limbs, rolled from solid Chocopan Gumpaste. The Hoof has a tinfoil core, over a pair of chopsticks.
Would I prefer it to have been cake? OF COURSE. Then someone gets to eat it! I digress.
The Hoof and the leg are covered in Magic Chocolate. Hoof first, dark grey with grooves and pockmarks. Magic Colors Super White Gel Paste gently raise the hoar-frosted highlights on the tip of the hoof. I love the little high-heel look that Reindeer Feet have. I mean, makes sense, they're all Women, but unlike humans their version looks downright comfy. Yes, reindeer have high heels. Yes they're all female, they have antlers in winter. Yes, the hoof is spongy and soft, unlike my last pair of spiked heel hi-risers. The Leg is also covered in brown Magic Chocolate, tooled to a hair-texture. Chocolate Brown Magic Colours Dust is my #1 go-to Shadow Enhancer, second only to their Aubergine, it brought up the detail perfectly. After that, I used Satin Ice fondant, which is quite brilliant white, to create the white hoof-feathers on top to cover the seam between brown and grey. Also because they DO have little hoof feathers!!! Eeeee. And, just so you KNOW it is a Reindeer, a red ribbon jingle-bell ankle-bob. Those bells are Satin Ice Gold Fondant, rolled and X'd. EASY so peasy y'all. I cried and laughed. Then my kid says, mom, don't forget, Alfie has to have a busted phone!! Yes my dear, you are correct!! More gumpaste, gel tints, paintbrush, done.
Alfie was sculpted in pieces. Literally. First I made his head from a ball of Chocopan Gumpaste, sculpted while I looked in a mirror and made faces at myself. My kids always get offended at first when I do that. "Like, WTH, Mom?". Then we laugh. I also made two splayed hands, by rolling up two same size balls and first making a mitten, then individual fingers. Hands are lucky because you always have a reference right there. Green Fondant Sleeves wrapped around the hands, and I shaped legs from the same green fondant. All of this was done first, to allow plenty of dry time. Alfie is solid sugar, like most elves.
I think the best part of this Sugar Sculpture was the assembly. I had extra special fun with the Reindeer Pie, soft Satin Ice fondant mixed with bits of crunchy spaghetti, topped with glitter and metallic nonpariels from Chef Rubber. Because OF COURSE Reindeer poop sparkles! I made a cardboard cutout the same size as the Hoof to do the actual Squishing, and to place Aflie's bits and pieces properly. It was very satisfying to push down and hear all of the spaghetti crunching, cracking.... the EXACT same crunching cracking Sugar Artists Learn to Dread.!!! Muah-ha HA. Once the Alfie Bits were in place on the Squished Glitter Manure, I dropped The Hoof. Squish. Busted Sugar Phone Dropped...
But the work, while complete, was not done. For in order for this Cake to Be Delivered, to you, I needed to photograph it and edit it and take Video of it, so that you could be here now, reading this, and hopefully, laughing along with me. Part of the Art it in the Consumption of it, so thank you for being with me today. And, part of that ability to consume is in setting up a backdrop, filming it, editing the video, posting the result here. How else would I be able to Tell you the Story of Alfie, Elfstagram, and The Blessings of Glitter Manure? "NOW ALFIE....".
I hope you have Laughed <3
See how I am? Cake work does at some point find it's way in, but so does a bunch of other stuff you didn't even know you liked.
If you enjoy this sort of discussion I would encourage you to check out my ebooks and videos where I explore many techniques, successes and failures, photo journals of Sweet Journeys Taken.
