Well, I hail from the literal Wild West, on the Colorado Front Range, where we sit on the edge of the grassy ocean of the Great Plains and the start of the rugged Rocky Mountains. When Heba asked us to take a nod to our local flavor this year, I immediately thought of the paintings series by the incredible painter Terri Kelly Moyers, "The Cowgirls of the American West". These prints have graced my bathroom walls for years with both style and substance. I love her work SO much. I wrote to Terri, and she was gracious enough to agree to my recreation of her beautiful painting!
This particular Horsewoman is especially dear to my heart. She stands in the trampled arena mud, bridle in hand, awaiting her run. Perhaps she looks rough to the untrained eye in her stained leather chaps, but closer examination reveals she is actually Dressed to The Nines, truly Sporting Her Best and Finest. Notice her boots with gold chasing, and her broad bullhide hand-worked leather belt with brass buttons. Then admire her ruby satin shirt and ivory hat, unstained and immaculate, only worn on the most special of days. Lastly, her finest treasure, her snow-white gauntlets & pouch, hand-beaded by loving native hands with roses, for The Roses in her Lips. Because after all the wrangling, she's still a Lady who appreciates the Finer Things.
I love her, in her tough, practical, delicate beauty, the Essence of the Western Style. I betcha she's one helluva Horsewoman, both tougher than the leather of her chaps, yet sweeter than morning breeze off the prairie.
Made with love from Caljava Fondant, Magic Chocolate modeling chocolate and Magic Colours gel colors.
Huge thanks to Terri Kelly Moyers, please check her and her page out (( http://terrikellymoyersart.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/MoyersArt/ )) . If you love THIS piece you will adore her others.
She truly captures the flavors of the Wild American West <3

Work In Progress
There weren't as many photos of this piece as I usually like to take, simply because I was badly behind schedule for this project! Her body was made of Magic Chocolate, and her clothes were all Caljava Fondx Gumpaste. There was a TON of patterning that went on with this beautiful gal, and proportion was a bit of a problem. She is deceptively complicated, in her so-casual stance, relaxed, body-language spot-on. I love this painting so much! The details of her fashion were the easy part, it was the drape and fall of the organic fabric-shapes that made it one of the tougher pieces I've done. I made her boots no less than four times, and her hat was a struggle that required overnight setting with plastic wrap - like a head of old-fashioned curlers.
Hence the lack of a ton of photos... I was simply too wrapped up in sugarpaste to rope many photos....
