Blue Angels Wedding - 5/30/20
Wow. This is one of those stories that sounds like it came straight out of a movie it is SO sweet. One day my phone rang, and instead of letting the machine get it like I usually do, I picked up. This gent was on the other end. As in, he called me "m'aam". He tells me that he and his bride are both veterans, and that they were scheduled to be married in Florida, on May 30th.
Naturally, in the middle of a pandemic, their plans were cancelled. He told me that the Blue Angels had a special place in their ceremony (??) and that now that they couldn't go to Florida, they needed something very very special to make their cake at their home wedding unforgettable. They had seen my Sweet Times at the Rockies showpiece (2013) online, and thought it was a cake topper! Well, no, I explained, that that piece was a competition piece that was just over 3ft tall.
Together we settled on a design for the piece you see, two Angels, spiraling upwards together in flight, in gumpaste as a topper for their locally-baked cake. The topper was made from Fondx fondant with CMC, sculpted slowly over several days. The original wire was bent, the ends inserted into straws filled with gumpaste, which were then stuck into a wrapped piece of foam and further food-safed with plastic wrap. The Sculpture was built on this same foam base, and shipped to the client who then removed it to expose the straw spurs, only when ready to put the topper on the cake. It worked really well. I have Work In Progress, a slow spin video, but I also have a video of how I packed this Topper for shipping. It arrived in perfect condition, and as you can see, the clients were VERY happy. I'm SO glad!!! It makes me happy when people are happy. Filling in for the Blue Angels is no small chore!!!
And YES I do toppers, of anything you can imagine. Allow me time, a month is best, more for international orders.
Best of Wishes and Congratulations to Mr/s H, thanks for letting my work be part of your sweetness
I extended instructions upon request for the permanent keeping of this piece. It was already sprayed in confectioners spray against moisture, but the cloche they are ordering will keep it dry against humidity. If kept out of direct light the topper should soar
for many more years to enjoy

Work in Progress
A few photos snapped during the creation. I used the blueprints I had downloaded from the first Blue Angels piece, so all I had to do was scale them for this project. I started by making all the fins and wings, to allow them max dry time. I then continued to the clouds around the wires, and then the bodies of the planes themselves. The plane you see in the photos is a model I bought, in 2013, also for the first project. You can also see the wire, food safing, and slow construction I was talking about. This piece took about two weeks. I would work on it a few minutes each day, with lots of drying time in between. Thank goodness for Colorado dry weather!!!
