Apocalypse Carousel 2020, Sugar Spooks V8 - 10/28/2020 - C'mon! Take a RIDE. It's 2020, Sugar Spooks V8!!! We all seem to be on the same terrifying Apocalyptic Carousel! Which Horse will you choose? Thestral prancing Famine? Rotting beauty Pestilence? Gaunt caninelike Death? Or Gore-Soaked gut-spilling War?? Round and Round we go, on a pile of Bones don't you know. Too much this year?? Be sure to watch the Video, these hooved Horrors move, prancing in a terrifying circle at full gallop.... to Nowhere...
This was a spinning sculpture, be sure to watch the video! We cut into it while it was still spinning, true to tradition. Each Horse was customized with Personality and Movement. Pestilence was Pretty. Rotting, decomposing and maggot-filled, but still cares that she's Pretty. War is wild, violent, bloody, and terrifying, with guts spilling out, shocking red blood and gore... She cares for nothing she tramples. Famine is bony, pale, dry, but still arched elegant perfectly poised but starved. She is all performance, without substance, hollow and dry. And Death, well, of course she is gaunt, still, unmoving as only Death could be, but she also shows you her true face, that of a meat-eater, Consumer of all Life. I cast over 150 little bones for this piece from Satin Ice gumpaste from a custom mold I sculpted and created ( Make Your Own Molds ), and all of the beautiful golden details are also Satin Ice, from their new Gold Fondant. Dusted and tinted with Magic Colors. Filled with chocolate cake and vanilla buttercream.
This cake is the most recent in a 8 year tradition called Sugar Spooks. Every year Cake and Sugar Artists from around the world come together to create the most horrific sculptures they can, on a theme. This year the admins chose to take us all out for a horrfiying night on the town at the CarnEvil of Terrror!!! Sugar Spooks is in the 8th amazing year, and is responsible for such favorites as Veggygeddon, Stay Puft Marshmallow Miss, Tardigrade, Anglerfish, and Kapala. FUN TIMES.So many times people want cute, sweet pastel cakes. At least once a year, we all get to show our best gore. BE SURE to check out ALL of the Sugar Spooks from this year and past years! Truly horrifying Cake! HAPPY SAMHAIN / HALLOWEEN

WORK IN PROGRESS
So many techniques, so little time! Seriously. I did model-building, mold-making, structure-creation, sugar-sculpting AND Cake!! Whew!! And, I made the whole thing spin the way it was supposed to. I won't lie, this was a tough project, and I nearly didn't win this one. First I created the canopy piece, which was gumpaste over structure. The lace was made from flexible chocolate, and the entire piece was designed to fit down over the spinning carousel platform, with the central column fixed in the middle. The Carousel needed a comprehensive theme, so I wanted one built from bones!! I sculpted the skulls, femurs, ribs, and hands that I wanted, and then created a mold from them. I then created a dozen of each Bone, and used them to decorate the Carousel as if they were embossed flowers. The Horses were affixed to a cardboard disk and rested on a standard electric turntable. The Horses were cast from a mold I created, and wires wrapped around chopsticks were then inserted for structure. They were then customized into distinct movements, over several days and additions of details. Finally they were each dusted with Magic Colors dust tints. The last step was to bake some cake. I carved them to exactly the right size/shape using a pattern, then covered them in Satin Ice Fondant. Extra Bones made up the Facade. There were lights inside the canopy, but sadly they were just too bright and ended up backlighting the Horses so badly I turned it off. I cut into this piece while it was still spinning! Truly terrifying all around!!!
