Tedeschi Trucks Band, v2 "Signs" - 7/31/2021 -
You may remember the first cake we took them, the "Made Up Mind" album cover with the Locomotive and the Bison, back in 2013. Well, I went an did it again...
I love their new album "Signs", and the cover artwork is plainly inspiring. I think "Still Your Mind" is my favorite track. The entire album contains a wide range of old and new, all swimming towards that Lighthouse. I really loved all the record, guitar, and amp they're carrying along, because what else would a school of musical sea creatures do? I feel I get it - different types, different ways, same direction...
The cake was made from Greg's Best Ever Chocolate Cake (thanks to Susan Trianos for posting!) paired with Vintage Molasses Vanilla Buttercream. It has a whisky-barrel brown sugar flavor that is just perfect - I used my Nielsen-Massey Vanillas Vanilla Bean Paste I had been hoarding I mean saving since November, for just such an occasion.
The Ocean is sculpted from this cake profile, given a Magic Chocolate modeling chocolate edge, covered with Caljava FondX Fondant and airbrushed with Magic Colours. Each critter was sculpted on the flat, and pieced together like a puzzle. I know I keep promising you videos of all these cakes, but I swear, I have it alllll on disk. Finally I topped it with a wave that I cast on a custom mold with Simi Cakes & Confections Isomalt and then shaped while still warm. SWEET
So many little details, and fish, on this one. I think the Big Tuna is my favorite, but naturally the Giant Squid takes close second. I bet he wails on that guitar.
The Show at Red Rocks was off the chain. Later we got to hang with Derek and Susan, and cut the cake for them. Turns out Susan "watches all those cooking shows" and watched me cut the cake, right in front of her 😲🥺🤯🤯😘👏👏👏. She even took a sugar fish home🐟🐠🎣.The Reason I make Cake is for the Memories. The Smiles. The sense of absolute wonder, excitement, and being lit up. The Feeling of being turned on, Sparked Up, Rainbow-Intrigued & Ready to Play is vital to our existence. It can be easy, in the pressure of the everyday, to forget that we forgot, and think those pressures are all there is.
But occasionally Life will provide opportunities for Fresh Wonder. I absolutely delight in the moments where I can participate in the Sparking of that Neon Rainbow Flame, and fanning it with sugary flavor profiles into a memory that endures and fuels.
The Cake Smiles are my Favorite, because in that moment I can see it, quite plainly, on their faces. For years, Derek Trucks, over his first Locomotive& Bison cake I took him, grinning like a kiddo, was my absolute Favorite Cake Smile. Well, he has been ousted.
Now Susan Tedeschi is my favorite. Look at that smile. She likes Cake as much as Derek does!
It was an unexpected thrill to hear that she "watches all of those cooking shows", and that she was a cake aficionado!! When she carefully took her own photos my heart sang. And then, I got to perform, for Susan Tedeschi. Yeah. I pulled the fish off. She picked up my favorite one. I got to chat with her as I carved the corner off at lighting speed (hubbs had to remind me to SLOW DOWN), and then handed her the first slice. I was SO HAPPY when she went straight for the Chocolate cake with Vintage Vanilla buttercream, and she seemed to really like it.
Indeed, EVERYBODY seemed to like it, and not just after-show sugar munchies! Regardless it was a sweet time, and there was even some left over for my sweet Red Rocks staffers.
I have the whole thing on VIDEO. Ive put it up on my @patreon page, so you have time to sign up. I show all sorts of awesome stuff to my private audiences, Beyond the Fondant
